01 [video]: the heart of the forest(?)
Name: Yako Katsuragi (un: katsuragi)
Date: May 25-ish
Format: Video
[ The young woman on the watch gives the camera a small smile, though her expression is also a touch uncharacteristically serious for those who’ve met her before. ]
First of all, for anyone who was badly affected by the full moons, I hope you’re feeling better now. If you need any medical attention or want to learn how to help keep others from going feral when you’re not Bonded to them, you should ask the Coven.
[ PSA done, she clears her throat, brushing her hair away from her face. ]
There’s something else I’d like to share. When we first came here, some people mentioned having a dream about being in a banquet in a forest. I had the same dream, too. I don’t know how much other people recall, but one of the the things I remember hearing while I was in it was the name of the place: Dewaint.
Anyway, I did a little looking into it, and it seems like I’ve found it. Or at least, um, something used to have that name.
[ That’s her cue to move, turning the watch to face ... a map. For those who’ve already seen a map of Geardagas, it will look pretty familiar, but it’s large — taking up most of a wall, and Yako has to take a few steps back to take it in its entirety — and it’s clearly old, preserved from being tampered with by a layer of glass. Yako continues speaking as she steps back in closer, panning her camera slowly as she points out areas of interest. ]
The librarians said this map is about five hundred years old. This is where Aefenglom is today, near the coast. And where Dewaint Forest was is...
[ She focuses on the dark spot towards the center of the map, right by the river (since she’s a little short, this takes a lot of standing on her toes, so the video goes a little wobbly before it straightens). The inscription scrawled over it bears a script similar to what might be seen in places around the Coven — and on the protection charms that were offered in the bonfire ceremony when they first arrived. Though the script might resemble Irish Ogden runes in form, for those who recognize such things, it’s clearly a different language. ]
There -- in the center of what The Wilde covers today.
[ Yako pauses, letting the camera linger. ]
To be honest, I’m not sure what this all means. I haven’t been able to find out much else about it, though some books said something about leylines passing through it and called it the heart of Geardagas. [ Although it’s a heart that most people seem to have forgotten. ] All I know is that it doesn't feel like a coincidence.
[ Spiel done, Yako turns the view back to herself. ]
I'm still trying to see what I can learn, but this is what I have right now. I thought other people might find this interesting too. I asked some people about this already, but if you have access to Parliament Records, the librarians and Miss Nessie think they might have more. So if you would like to help with that or with looking through some more books and papers, please let me know! If you’ve found anything related, I'd like to hear about it too.

‘huh, sounds interesting,’ yako thinks, not realizing the clusterfuck of id that is persona 4
It sounded like they were there for a meeting, though I don’t know if there was a purpose to it. I think I even heard some of them say they hadn’t had a gathering like that in a thousand years! It might be a bit optimistic to think histories in Aefenglom would have a record of something like that, when just finding out the forest existed was tricky enough ... but I wonder if there’s any other way to confirm a meeting like that happened.
Did you happen to run into anything that attacked you in the dream?
ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ she finna learn
Thinks a character played by a mod, ominously.]If there are other cities like Aefenglom here in Geardagas, maybe they'll have records, too? Though it doesn't sound like just anyone can leave the city, from what I've heard and learned from the people who take us out of the Wall to help people in the slums and settlements outside... and who knows if theirs will go back as far as that.
[ But he does dip his head, just slightly, in a nod. ]
There were Shades, I think. They looked like the Fae, but warped, from the Cwyld infection. I thought they were - [ mm, a pause, because monsters now carries a different connotation ] - a threat that I'd faced in my world, before I came through the Looking-Glass House.

(unsure) intensifies]I ran into those same things in the dream, too! [ Too perky for a brush with life or death? Maybe. ] When Miss Nessie and Miss Ainsley started talking about the Cwyld, those were the first things I thought of. Of course, I haven’t seen anything infected by the Cwyld that badly in real life so I can’t compare them, but....
[ Not that she’s hoping for that, but theres no denying more data would be useful. ]
Do we know if Aefenglom trades with other cities? I assume that big harbor isn’t just for show.

it's fine]I haven't seen anything that far along, either, but I did see some wildlife that was infected in smaller doses. Not a lot, and not up close. But it definitely has a similar kind of look, I think, to what those did.
[ Souji is willing to go out there again, to get a closer look at the infected. If only to learn more, and learn the truth. ]
It does, definitely. I've been down to the market, and talked to a few of the stall owners about where they get their stock. Some of them come from the farms outside the Wall, or hunters that go out, but there's a lot of trade from outside the city. Mostly by ship, but sometimes from the river or parties that come in caravans, basically.

I wonder if we’ll ever get a chance to see those other cities... not that Aefenglom hasn’t been welcoming, but I’m curious what life is like in other parts of Geardagas. Like if they have their own Coven, or if it’s just another part of this one. Ah, but that’s probably getting ahead of myself.
[ ... ]
Do you know if, um, air transport is a thing that exists here? Someone did suggest flying over the Wilde for a better view might be a possibility, but I’m not sure how that would work in reality.

They've said something about this being the biggest branch of the Coven, or something to those lines. So it stands to reason they do. Maybe they specialize in a different kind of magic than this one does... I wonder if they deal with the Cwyld as much, too.
[ Things for later, especially with that question. ]
If I remember my history right, this place feels very... 1800s? At least Earth-wise, if you happen to know it. [ Remembering, sheepishly, that many aren't from Earth. ] The technology didn't allow for planes until a little while after, but I think air balloons at least existed. And with magic, it could be possible, but I'd be worried about the conditions if that is a viable thing.

[ Safe mode of transportation? Absolutely not. Stereotypical but probably still incredibly fun? Hell yeah. ]
Though to go back to your earlier point, I guess I don’t really know the answer either, about whether other branches deal with it so much! I should probably ask. It’d be interesting to find out if the Cwyld spreads differently in other areas.
