People like that never do. To them, there's no other possibility than their righteousness. There may have been people who had doubts among them, but pack mentality is a powerful enough influence to keep them in line, especially where life and death is involved. They likely would have tortured and killed any defectors along with the Mirrorbound, had they not been discovered prematurely.
It is a mentality that happens among rulers and people in power as well as those who've lost that power. They simply become so attached to it, the ability to be unfailingly right in everything they do, that all else ceases to be relevant. In this case, their time spent with comfortable, cushy lives did nothing but condition them into believing we were trouble from the first.
...Though, perhaps they're not wrong on that one, but it isn't exactly something we can control.
