How is death viewed in the world you come from?

[Now there's a question. Mogget pauses a moment before he continues, just to let it sink in.]

In the Old Kingdom, when one dies, their soul moves over into a different realm. There they traverse nine gates along a river until finally passing on. I understand that this isn't the norm outside of my home world.

[Not close to it, in fact.]

So, indulge me, if you would.

[There's a pause, as Kor mulls over that answer. It's not something he'd ever given much thought to the intricacies of, even though he's lost his fair share of loved ones in his life.]

...Dunno, really. I think the church teaches that our Spirias join with the winged whale in the sky when we die, or something like that. But that's not what I believe.

Is this a matter of faith, or proven knowledge?

Proven, unfortunately. Death's not as much of a barrier as it's probably supposed to be, so there's a lot of firsthand accounts from the other side and beyond.

That sounds like a potent recipe for conflict.

[His immediate thought had been that this would certainly be the kind of thing that people would fight about. As if humans really needed a reason to fight.]

What do you believe?

[It is very curious to Mogget - this concept of belief without proof. Where he is from, Death is what it is and everyone knows it.]

[Interesting. And not a bad way to go about it, all things considered.]

And if someone punished for a wicked life continues to be wicked... just how low could they sink?

My experience of it is a personal matter.

[Not one he's going to talk about, given that it passes far too closely to revealing his true nature and no one is going to hear about that.

The other query though... well, he can answer that.]

Those who manage to return would be the Lesser Dead, and in most cases need to find an anchor of some kind. These would normally be the vacant bodies of the recently deceased, or some other form they have been forced into by a necromancer or Greater Dead that controls them.

I didn't have any plans on dying.

Fear of the unknown is understandable, if often futile.

Curious. Most people I've spoken to are operating only on faith.

Your world's mechanics may be far closer to mine than first expected.

Where I'm from faith just means you're going to be disappointed.

But I mean, guess it makes sense? Statistically there have to be a few worlds that kind of match up in some way. Even if it's the annoying ways.

Well... Everyone wants a happy ending for the people they care about.

Eventually, every soul will be allowed to be reborn. However, for the crimes you commit, you have to suffer your punishment. Once you learned, you will be allowed to return in some form or another. There are multiple levels of hell depending on what one has done in life. I will refrain from describing them as they are not good conversational topics.

I suppose it would be those whose souls continue to repeat crimes who would be more likely to end up being less than human in their next life.

There's a lot of fighting, and religion can be a part of it, but it usually isn't over where we go when we die. Sometimes, it's over something material, like land. For the more extreme religions, they believe they'll be rewarded for killing anyone against their religion, but they're not the majority.

I have a question about your own world. You said they eventually 'pass on'. Do you mean they stop existing?

Mmm... I believe that when you die, your Spiria lives on in the people you've connected and bonded with over the course of your life. So even when you're gone, you're never forgotten. And as long as you're not forgotten, you're not truly gone.

Because it's talking about people dying. It's personal, and not exactly something people go into with strangers on some network.

I dunno. Being a Heroic Spirit is a pretty fun deal. Even if I get to exist for a short period of time when summoned. Usually.

It's way weirder to be around for two years, like here. And alive again.

In a way it seems to be. Though I have never borne witness to any Gates. The souls of the living return to the aetherial realm. In time they will be born anew. Such is the cycle.

Upon the world I speak of, ghosts and spirits are rarely more than a lingering emotions or memories imprinted upon aether which has yet to pass from the corporeal world. There are exceptions.

Do the dead in your world remain in this other realm? If they dwell there, from where does new life gain their soul? And how does this not cause stagnation in your world?

I don't have a great deal of anything to do.

But dying is not on my very short to-do list.
