I have yet to have the chance to study them at length, and would not presume to make an uneducated statement. But it seems clear to me, given the natural state in which some Mirrorbound arrived only to subsequently find themselves subject to the acquisition of "monstrous" traits, that is a mutation triggered by some environmental factor here.
