The Network: May, An Inauspicious Arrival

The Watches Everyone who arrives in an unorthodox way and eventually shows up at the Coven for 'orientation', will receive a strange, watch-like device compliments of the Coven and Parliament. Miss Nessie or one of the welcome wagon crew will give characters a run-down of how to use the various functions and they are encouraged to test them out for themselves. It would be good for them to get in touch with their fellow Mirrorbound, of course! Fourth wall characters will not be able to make their own posts in the communities, so they may use this post to make "network posts" of their own by top-leveling. The log post is right over here.

What's the deal with this other Nier? You know much about him?

He's my roommate. Around my age, I think... early twenties or so? Quiet, kind of an oddball. But really nice. He's a great cook. He used to be a mercenary, before he got here — he looks like it too! Has this huuuuge sword.

I don't know a lot, other than what he's told me. He's not the most talkative guy.

Huh. Not the weirdest crap I've dealt with, I guess, but it's weird.

Most things are weird here.

I told you already! Aerith. I used to be a florist in a place you've never heard of, I bet. Not much to know other than that, buuut... I am a witch. Did anyone explain that to you?

Yeah, yeah, I was looking for a little more than a name. And I remember someone mentioning something about witches. I wasn't paying much attention.

I'm just a humble florist, pal. Anything else wouldn't make sense, believe me! It's best we keep it at that.

You didn't pay attention? Oh boy. When you get here, you're told that you're a Monster, or a Witch. Witches can use magic, monsters have a physical transformation, yadda yadda. Does any of that sound familiar?

[okayestdad]

Sorta. I hear crazy shit all the time so I've learned to tune it out at this point. My guess is I just gotta kill all these monsters and then poof, I'll be home.

[evanescent]

Listen very carefully! What did they tell you that you were? You have to remember, right? It was one of two things.

Well I'm no monster. That's obvious. And if they're monsters, why shouldn't I kill em?

It's not obvious at all. That's the whole point of the orientation. Seriously? Were you asleep the whole time? Did you hit your head or something?

You're either a Monster, or a Witch, but the point is that they work together.

[okayestdad]

Fine, then I'll kill all of them.

I'm going to talk really slowly okay? So pay attention!

When you got here, the nice lady that gave you the magic watch told you that you were either a monster, or a witch. If you're a monster, you're going to transform and get bigger and stronger. It happens to a lot of people. Don't worry! If you're a witch, you can use magic. Monsters aren't bad here. They're just people. Witches and monsters bond to keep the witches from losing control of their magic, and to keep monsters calm.

The monsters and witches are trying to stop something called the Cwyld. It's an infection that's spread and creates madness. Those infected creatures are what everyone's trying to stop. Not the monsters, not the witches.

Got it. Just show me where the thing I gotta kill is and I'll get out of here.

You know, I don't think you got it at all.

It's not that easy. If we could just kill something and leave, do you really think so many people would be here?

Yeah? I'm not just anyone. And I've got my daughter waiting for me back home.

Oh! In that case, I'm sure if you ask the infection spreading through and killing everything really nicely to send you home, it will.

Wait... infection? Is it- the Black Scrawl?

[evanescent]

I don't know what that is. Is that an infection from your world?

[she sighs.] It really goes through one ear and out the other with you, huh? It's called the Cwyld. It's really bad, and it isn't going to go away if you kill one bad thing and call it a day. [sing-song:] That's why it's important to listen to the orientation!

[a pause, and her tone sobers some.] It's similar to another illness I've seen, but that wasn't called the Black Scrawl either.

What does it look like?

[Despite his well... everything, he actually seems serious about this.]

[She isn't sure if this 180 from idiot meathead into gravitas is a good thing, but she does answer.]

Like black mold. Tar. In humans, it looks like a splotchy dark rash before it begins to spread. It infects the trees, plantlife, animals...
