does anyone know why monsters can't do magic?
i'm not talking about being able to do alchemy, i know that monsters can follow recipes and make stuff that way (;¬_¬)
but monsters are just as connected to the magic of this world as the witches are
so what gives???

is it just that no monster's ever been successful and so everyone's just assuming they can't?
or is there actually something that makes it so they can't

just curious

Well, given the existence of monsters themselves are part of how the mana of this world manifests, I think the lack of ability to perform practical magic has to do with the fact that their being is supported be the mana itself. This is why bonds stabilize monsters, after all!

There's quite a few books on the theory of all of this at the Coven, if you care to look them up! Though it does seem to be mostly theory, at this point. There's still a great deal about the magic of this world we don't understand yet.

[She's too lazy to type.]

I've been told that some species do have magic as a part of what they can do. Like...How fauns can make plants grow quicker. It could be done with a witches spell, but a faun can do it easier.

[At least she thought so. She wasn't a faun, that was just an example she could think of. One that didn't give away her own possible abilities.]

[Hark, it's one of the rare times Kaede uses the network! How fortunate for Akko.]

depends on what you're thinking of as magic

i can do that.

[sure, his death-by-spice molton lava from hell soup is surely proof of that.]

where can i find these recipes?
long_live_the_queen: (no don't open that)

you're thinking too small

i can't pick things up without touching them anymore, but i can see in the dark without any potions

[If the dark wasn't total, anyway.]

a potion could make me a shadow, i guess, but I can do that myself [If the dark was sufficient.]

why wouldn't that count?

no?

I didn't choose to have powers before the mirror either

[...she did choose what she did with that power, but!! Separate issue.]

I don't know. It doesn't exist at all where I'm from...

Going by the dream from when I first arrived though. Humans and monsters were separated for a long time. There weren't any witches then.

I have. Other than what we already know, I haven't had much success.

But I won't stop looking.

I don't think that's how it works, stranger. Mana that's dedicated to sustaining oneself isn't necessarily able to be refocused back into practical execution. Human beings, for instance, can't turn the energy generated in their cells into anything other than fuel for their own bodies.

Given how the links and everything work, I think it's basically that the monsters need as much mana as they can get to keep themselves stable.

I mean, they need witches as a mana source so they don't go feral, so it seems like using mana for spells would be kind of a bad plan to me.

"Symbiotic relationship."

Why does it matter anyway?
With everything else going on, having to learn magic would make everything an even bigger pain in the ass.
Don't need it.
