Does magic exist in your world? What is it like, and how do others view those who use it? If not, is there something similar to it where you are from?

With so many of us coming from different worlds, it would be a good idea for us to pool our knowledge and resources to figure things out. The rules might not be the same here, but having a base to start from is better than nothing at all, wouldn't you agree?

Yes. It has rules and definition, kind of like an alternate science.

But mostly it works by will and concentration.

That makes a lot of sense to me. Another person put up a post and we were talking similarly, not about magic, per se, but about comparing notes.

Is it something that is widely taught, then, like the sciences? If it works through concentration, does that mean that there are some theories or methods that work better than others?

No, not at all. Most people in my world do not believe that magic exists. It is hidden, and practiced in secret. Though the secret is preserved as much because no one wants to believe in magic as because the wizards are good at hiding it.

Yes. It takes will and concentration to make the magic work, and some people are better at learning and teaching it,l based off of their approach to that, than others.

Why is it hidden? Does law mandate it, or is there another reason?

I see. I wonder if magic might be the same here as well. That some people have a natural talent for picking up the basics, understanding abstract concepts and running with them. How is it taught, through books? Rote memorization? Practical application?

Well, in the past, people with magic and people without magic tended to not get along. It got bad enough that people with magic went into hiding, and as a result, people over time forgot about magic, and came to think it an imaginary thing.

Sometimes books, but mostly one teacher to one student.

I see. It seems that there are a number of worlds where mages and those unable to use magic do not see eye to eye.

So magic is taught aurally, in the same way that stories are passed along. Fascinating. How easy is it to pass along those traditions, if those who practice magic are still in hiding?

Some books exist, and wizards have a secret society, one which passes along learning, and teaching, to the new generations.

It's not as hard as you would think. Most people ignore signs of magic if they are not overt. So teaching those who manifest magic is easier than it might sound.
