Hey. Name's Juza Hyodo. Thanks to the guys in the council that managed to get theater unbanned, I 'preciate that a lot. I was an actor back home 'nd now I can do that here too. [Without committing theater crimes.]

This is a general ask for help. We need a script writer 'nd somebody who can create costumes. 'm okay with a needle 'n thread. Can't help much with writin'.

Don't think we need anything real fancy for the first play... kinda depends on the script we end up with.

This might be a dumb question but can't you just use a play that already exists? Is there a reason you gotta do a new one?

[ Maybe there's some rule about it or a convention or who knows? It just seems way easier to use a play that already exists rather than finding someone with literary talent and putting yourself in their hands. ]

I dunno if there even are any scripts around here. It's been a long time since it's been allowed and I got no idea where to start lookin'. I only have... one play I memorized from back home.

[The only one that he's been part of so far.

Also Mankai's resident scriptwriter has absolutely spoiled them.]

That your hobby? You could still do it without a reason to, right?

Even if you haven't got it memorized, you probably remember a bunch of plays that you saw or performed, right? It might not be word for word, but I bet you could recreate them, and it's not big deal if it's not exactly the same, right? I mean, who is gonna know the difference!

[ He sounds so excited by the idea, he really does think he is helping, by suggesting this... ]

What?! No way. I grew up on a sheep farm. We sold raw wool and yarn and stuff but we made clothes to sell, too. Knitting was, like, this tedious chore I would've never ever imagined missing. Ten year old me is really disgusted right now, believe me.

Don't think I'd do them any justice like that. 'nd the storyline could get weird if I didn't get some details right.

[He's also only watched so many plays. A lot of them were so long ago that he couldn't manage to piece those together. Their first play wouldn't make much sense without a small aside to explain why the main character started caring about his partner.

If he tried to cobble something together, he doesn't think it would be good.]

Guess when everything's weird somethin' familiar's nice.

Hmmm. I guess not.

[ Shoot. He'd thought it was a really clever idea. But then, he's hardly an expert on theater - apparently getting all the details just right is important. ]

It's too bad. I was kinda curious about plays from another world.

[ He sounds a bit forlorn, when he admits that, but then Reynir's voice brightens as he goes on: ]

But a new play would be cool, too. And there's got to be somebody in this city that's an aspiring writer, right?

[ Reynir can't help wondering, when Juza says that, what familiar things he might be missing, living in this pervasively weird place. It's a little easier, being disconnected from his home, knowing that so many other people here are feeling the same way. ]

I guess that must be it. It's different, when you're away from home and it's not a lame boring thing you have to do.

Somethings might work, but stitchin' it all together would be the hard part. I'd probably need a writer for that kinda thing anyway. 'm really hopin' there's at least one writer around.

[Because he wants to act and get back on stage, but they need a script for that. Otherwise they're just doing sketches.

There's a little pause before he admits.]

I kinda miss homework and I always sucked at it.

Oh, yeah, I'm sure you'll find somebody soon enough! This place is huge, there have to be a few writers in all these people.

[ To someone as painfully rural as Reynir, Aefenglom is enormous and extremely cosmopolitan. There have GOT to be some competent playwrights in the mix... ]

That's something we've got in common, for sure. Well, not the missing it.

[ Scholarly pursuits had never been a strength of Reynir's. ]

Hey, so this is a crazy idea, but maybe you'll get more writers to come forward if you arrange it like it's a contest or something? That way, if a lot of people volunteer, you've got an easy way of turning down the crappy plays, and you might get more submissions if people think they can, like, win.

Huh... That might work. Gotta admit, I've never hosted a competition before.

[Or been part of one.]

There's usually some kind of prize, right? It's not just the feel good part of winnin'. There's more to it, least when I noticed them back home.

There's a first time for everything, right?

[ And perhaps this is an area where he can actually help. ]

I was in charge of running a few in our village. Baking contests... bets on how many lambs would be born in a season... and speed-shearing, obviously.

[ OBVIOUSLY. If Juza was in any doubt, Reynir's extremely rural roots are getting more and more obvious. But he has to work with the experience he has. ]

Anyway, yeah, coming up with the prize is half the fun! It doesn't have to be something expensive. Just something they can brag about and sound impressive to their friends!

Guess so.

[Juza's not judging him for the rural roots, at least. He has no idea what it's like to work on a farm, but it sure sounds like a lot of work.

There's a soft little noise.]

Huh... Guess I'll ask around for that too. [Or he'll ask Omi about it, because that man has so many different hobbies that he might have something lying around.]
