Seeking anyone with an interest in insects:

I have been reading a guide about the various insects found throughout the city. And as the weather has been warming up, I have been surveying to see what I can find.

I have so far found the following:
A giant snail
This rather cute poodle moth
and this tarantula.

I also came across this rather... curious looking specimen but, my book has no information as to what it could be. If anyone has any suggestions I would be most interested to hear it! I would also be interested to hear about any bugs you come across.

Those were soybeans Demyx and they are not gross! Though I suppose I can see why you've made the comparison...

I wasn't exactly stopping to smell any of them, Demyx. But no, none of them smelt noticeably offensive.

tbh I've never met a moth I didn't like. Except for the ones that dive-bomb you when you're standing under a streetlight just having a smoke. Then they get their fairy dust all over your black t-shirt and can't fly anymore. And somehow make you feel guilty even though you were just minding your own business.

It certainly is! The guide says they can get even larger.

I am! This guide states they can reach a maximum size of 15.5 inches in fact.

It looks like a messed up mantis. So it's not a mantis. I like the tarantula, personally.

Heh. I can see the resemblance. Perhaps it is a relative of some kind? And I quite like the tarantula too, though I can't say it liked me in the same way.

It might be. I don't know much about bugs.

Fortunately not, though I can't say it was happy with my picking it up.

How much do you know about identifying bugs? Not including the one you mentioned.

Well I'm not an entomologist by any means, but I was encouraged to learn the basics. For example features such as the legs, the presence of wings and antennae are all important characteristics to identifying an insect. Though it's also important to have reliable reference material on hand too.

Awww, that moth is adorable! The tarantula's kinda cute too.

Dunno about that last one, though. That just looks... weird. Then again, bugs usually look weird, so no surprise, I suppose.

I'm so glad you think so! Tarantula's can be quite endearing.

I know people always freak out about spiders, but I've always thought tarantulas were too soft and fuzzy to be scary or gross. I held one in my hand as a kid once. It was awesome.
