Hey everybody, this is- uh, this is Hiccup. [That nasally voice sounds bright today, but like he's not entirely used to talking over these watches. It still feels like he's chatting to an inanimate object somehow, even though he knows other people will be able to hear this, because he hasn't used it much up to this date.] I think I'm starting to get used to being here, sort of. It's been an adjustment. And, you know, everything seems fine a lot of the time, but I'm sure we've all figured out from those dreams by now that- that this world is dangerous, too.

So, uh, I wanted to make an offer. I'm a blacksmith back home, and I finally finished setting up my forge. It's- you know, it's not fancy, but it's good enough to start working in. If anybody wants to bring scrap metal by, I'd be happy to make things out of it for you, no charge. Well, no charge unless I have to buy other materials. Weapons, armor, household objects, just about anything. I know a few things about leatherworking and general construction, too, and I can fireproof anything you'd like, but I have to charge for that because of what it involves.

And, hey, if any other smiths or crafters want to come by and borrow the space, that's great too.

My forge is right next to Keith's and my house just past the slums, barely into the woods, we call it Wilder's Edge- or, I call it Wilder's Edge, he wanted to just call it "Keith's and Hiccup's shack in the woods" but that's way too long to put on a map- [Can you hear the excessive hand gesturing in this speech?] -but anyway! If you don't want to come out this far by yourself, I can pick you up from the city, it's not a problem!

I'm afraid my talent lies in a bit of woodworking and I'm still not much of a craftswoman, but... I'd be interested in seeing what you can do with metal. There's something joyous about seeing it shaped and poured and formed into something useful.

I already have a sword, but I've no armor. Do you think you could make some for me...?

Oh, I enjoy woodworking too! Though my carving skills are mostly decorative and- well, I can mostly dragons. I come from a place where we've historically had to do a lot of construction. A lot. [Basically he loves anything that involves working with his hands.] You're welcome to come by any time, though, I'm probably going to have a lot of things to work on.

I can! What kind of armor are you used to wearing? And I'll need measurements, and materials, and- oh, are you a witch or a monster? Because that could make things a little complicated too. [Not that he wouldn't welcome the challenge.]

How large is your forge, if you don't mind my asking?

Not quite as big as my workshop back home, but it's a decent size. Big enough for two or three people to work without getting in each other's way. I'm still collecting tools but I have most of the basics, and I just moved the anvil in yesterday.

Whoah, no charge? A forge would seriously speed up some of my projects! Do you have a map?

No charge. It doesn't seem right, you know? [He's just a good boi.] The only catch is that I will expect my forge rules to be followed, because uh, I do share the property with someone, and it's looking like a few people are interested.

[Not that he's too worried. A dragon and a large space wolf are good enforcers of rules.]

What material would you need for an armor base? Lightweight and flexible.

That would depend on what kind of trouble you expect to run into. Do you want something leather with some inlaid metal, or ringmail, or plate? And if you want leather, I'll have to fireproof it. [Which he has no problems doing for his bro.] It really depends on if you expect people to be stabbing at you.

...Please don't get yourself stabbed.

Wow, that sounds like a really useful skill.

I don't suppose you do something like accessories or jewelry, do you?

It's a pretty necessary skill back where I come from. You make your own stuff or you spend a lot of gold buying from traders. [And that's not convenient, being in the middle of nowhere on a frigid wet rock in the sea.]

I don't usually, vikings uh- we don't actually produce a lot of jewelry, you know? But I could manage small pieces if they weren't too intricate.

You guys live out in the woods? Isn't that, uh. Dangerous?

We just didn't want to stay in the Haven. It's- you know, it didn't sit right, how they "acquired" those houses for us. Plus, it's... a lot closer to what we're both used to. It's more practical for us.

It's not that dangerous as long as you aren't living alone and don't go out too far, and Keith and I have Toothless and Kosmo with us. The land he found is clean, no Cwyld, and we both keep an eye on things to make sure nothing starts creeping in.

[ As easy as it would be to reply to the video, it seems a little... silly. They live in the same house, after all. At most Hiccup is outside, it's not that far. So he heads out to find the other, leaning against one of the forge's fresh new supports, smile curving despite himself. ]

Just inviting anyone out to the old abode now? I don't know if Kosmo's going to like that.

[ Who is he kidding, Kosmo will get pets and belly rubs and he'll be living. ]

[The forge is looking nice. Hiccup's been putting a lot of work into it ever since they fixed the biggest problem areas of the actual house - it's a little ways back from the house in a clear spot, built in the viking style, with heavy support pillars and ventilation in the form of a gap between the top of the walls and the roof, with eaves hanging over to keep most of the rain out. The floor is formed from natural slabs of stone (that had taken forever to haul back) and mortar, and the equipment is strewn over rough wooden tables and hung on the walls from iron hooks. The furnace itself is the centerpiece, and the anvil he bought and hauled back from town.

Sure enough, he's inside, with the door open - it's almost like a wide garage door, waxed canvas panels stretched over a frame that allows it to be raised and lowered. Everything's a bit rough, but it reminds him of home.

He looks up, hanging up his leather apron with a smile.]

Oh, I'll make sure everyone stays out of the house and the garden. It'll just be a little more traffic through the forge. I think I can lay a path that'll uh, keep visitors to this corner of the property, so nobody should bother Kosmo too much.

[Suppressing a laugh, because now he's imagining an armored dog and it's kind of funny.] Yeah, I could. I've built armor for Toothless before, so why not?

And Wilder's Edge sounds much better. Just my opinion.

Are you offering an extra pair of hands? [He laughs.] I don't need help with my own projects, per se, but I'll never turn down company. Are you a smith too?

Thank you, that's what I said. He just went on about 'why do we have to name it anyway?'- [Said in his best, good-natured, goofy Keith impression.] and I said, so you can reference it on a map or in conversation and people will know where you're talking about.

[He... might be able to, if he knew what those words meant and what a telescope was supposed to accomplish. He's built functional spyglasses before. He just doesn't know to associate the two concepts.]

you do have to be pretty careful out here, and check to make sure your land isn't infected and that the cwyld doesn't start moving in, but we haven't had too much trouble so far. i wouldn't recommend it to anybody living alone. keith and i also have large familiars with us.

I don't think Keith's very good at naming things. [He says it fondly, though. They've grown to be friends over the few months they've been here - obviously, or they wouldn't be living together.]

[He sounds a little brighter when he replies,] I'd love to see your designs sometime. If you're ever free, you're welcome to stop in and see the forge! We'd be happy to pick you up so you don't have to make the walk.

Never? Why not? Did you not want to train with weapons, or...? [It's almost inconceivable, coming from a viking society, that someone knows absolutely nothing about how to handle an axe or a sword.] My, uh, my betrothed- Astrid- she taught me most of what I know. I could show you a few things with a blade.
